Heidi’s Foresight: Protecting the Sanctuary She Loved

Heidi Jane Fischer was a gentle, wise, and steadfast spirit, deeply devoted to the people and places she loved. She lived with conviction, never seeking the spotlight but always making a difference. Whether tending her beloved garden, traveling, volunteering and advocating, or simply showing up for friends and family, Heidi’s presence was deeply felt.

On February 14, 2023, Heidi passed away peacefully at the age of 63 after a courageous battle with cancer. In her final years, she found immense joy in San Damiano—her sanctuary. Just a short walk from her home in Madison’s Lake Edge neighborhood, it became a refuge where she could take in Lake Monona’s sweeping views, the rustling trees, and a peaceful escape from the world. Even as illness made walking difficult, she continued to visit, finding comfort in this majestical place.

A Vision for the Future

With a 30-year career in the City of Madison’s Department of Planning and Community and Economic Development, Heidi understood the delicate balance between progress and preservation. She was keenly aware of the threats of private development and was unwavering in her belief that San Damiano should remain public land. She supported restoring the historic Frank Allis House, but she also recognized the financial realities that came with it. More than anything, she opposed any development that would block the lake view, remove trees, or harm the land’s natural beauty. She saw San Damiano’s potential to bring people together and hoped that it would be thoughtfully restored with the community in mind.

A Final Act of Generosity

Heidi’s actions spoke volumes. In a profound demonstration of foresight and generosity, she left a portion of her estate to Friends of San Damiano, ensuring that the place she cherished would be preserved for future generations. Her gift has allowed Friends of San Damiano to continue its stewardship, advocacy, and commitment to keeping this idyllic space accessible for all. Heidi’s legacy now lives on in the land she walked, the views she treasured, and the mission she deeply believed in.

We are extremely grateful for Heidi’s generosity and vision. If you would like to honor her legacy, consider supporting Friends of San Damiano through planned giving, donations, or active stewardship. Every contribution helps protect and preserve this special place—just as Heidi always hoped.

Thank you to Heidi’s friends and family for sharing her story and allowing us to honor her legacy.
