Volunteering with Purpose: A Conversation with Jim Cerro

As a non-profit organization, Friends of San Damiano (FoSD) wouldn’t be where it is today without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. Our Communications Committee and Community Engagement Committee member Liz Dannenbaum recently interviewed Jim Cerro about his service to and passion for FoSD.

What Jim appreciates most about the San Damiano property is its location as it’s “one of the last, undeveloped pieces of property on Lake Monona and has provided the East Side residents of Madison and Monona years of wonder.”

He adds that his choice to devote his time to FoSD is because “we all endeavor to see this environmental gem preserved in perpetuity for the enjoyment of everyone. Jim adds that there are many “dedicated individuals striving toward a common goal who truly appreciate the opportunity to interact with one another while making a difference.”

Two activities, in particular, stand out to Jim as his favorites: “The first being the Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival and the second being the Atlatl competition during the Ho-Chunk Winter games. I was, much to my surprise, the only person to hit the bear in the heart.” An Atlatl is an ancient spear-throwing tool used to increase the speed and distance of a spear, often demonstrated today as a traditional hunting method. Winter Games is an event not to be missed and plans are being made for it to be hosted by the Ho-Chunk Nation and FoSD in early 2025.

We are incredibly grateful to Jim for his dedication and commitment to Friends of San Damiano. Thank you, Jim, for everything you do to ensure San Damiano remains an accessible place for the Dane County community.
